The Associated Press just released its preseason college basketball poll and, to no one’s surprise, Kentucky holds the No. 1 spot. The Wildcats, with their rare group of freshmen All-Americans, received 27 first-place votes and 1,546 points from the 65-member national media poll.
Most of my readers are interested in Kansas and Connecticut. The Jayhawks, with freshman sensation Andrew Wiggins and the second best recruiting class in the nation, came in No. 5 and UConn settles in at No. 18.
Michigan State is No. 2, followed by defending national champion Louisville and Duke at No. 4. After Kansas, the rest of the top 10 was Arizona, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Syracuse tied for eighth and Florida.
Ohio State was 11th and was followed by North Carolina, Memphis, VCU, Gonzaga, Wichita State, Marquette, Connecticut, Oregon and Wisconsin.
The last five ranked teams were Notre Dame, UCLA, New Mexico, Virginia and Baylor.
The new American Athletic Conference has three ranked teams. The Atlantic Coast Conference had the most teams in the preseason Top 25 with five and the Big Ten had four. The Big 12 and Pac 12 also had three ranked teams.
The Concordia that UConn is playing is a DIII school in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
