If you are thinking college football on Jan. 6, 2014, you are probably focused on the BCS Championship between Florida State and Auburn in Pasadena, Calif. But on another level, Connecticut coach Bob Diaco finalized his coaching staff Monday and released the names and bios of the new coaches.
Most of these names had already been reported in various media outlets in recent days. Nonetheless, it is official and Diaco can move forward with recruiting plans and setting the stage for his first spring session in Storrs. Much of the spotlight will fall on offensive coordinator Mike Cummings and defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter, but I think the guy under the gun is Kevin Wolthausen, who has been named recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach. Priority No. 1 for the Huskies has to be an upgrade in recruiting. And that improvement needs to come quickly.
Here’s the main release from the UConn Athletics web site.
There are some guys with playing major college playing experience, NFL experience and solid coaching backgrounds. Those are important ingredients. Players today like to know where their coaches have been and where they can lead them. Players listen closely when the assistant coach has a proven resume. Only time will tell how this staff works together and whether the results will be in line with the lofty goals for UConn football.
Here is some great coverage from Jim Fuller and the New Haven Register, who caught up with Diaco while I was getting ready for couch potato duty during the BCS title game.
