How does UConn’s hiring of Diaco rank among nation’s new coaches?

I read an interesting piece today by my long time friend Dennis Dodd, Senior College Football Columnist for CBSSports.com.

In his Jan. 23 column, Dennis rates the most recent coaching hires in college football. I thought UConn fans might be interested in what DD had to say about Bob Diaco’s hiring to be head coach of the Huskies. Dennis ranks it the 12th best move of the hiring season. That’s 12th out of 19.

Not great. Not horrible. Somewhere in between, I guess.

You come away feeling it was a better move for Diaco than it was for UConn. Are the Huskies a stepping stone for Diaco? You better believe it. Is the future about to get better for UConn? Probably not.

Here’s what Dodd had to say about UConn’s decision:

12. Bob Diaco, Connecticut: Perfect place to start for the 2012 Frank Broyles Award winner. If Diaco succeeds, he moves up and gets a BCS job. Either way, UConn football stays outside the velvet rope of the BCS.

Their best chance in the playoff era is to win the American and hope. This program has fallen far since going to the Fiesta Bowl in 2011. Maybe that’s why the Huskies didn’t make the BCS cut.
