Syracuse University wants a new dome.
According to The Post-Standard newspaper in Syracuse, University officials are proposing construction of a 44,000 seat building with a retractable roof at a cost of $495 million.
Wow.
UConn better get going on those Gampel Pavilion renovations. The Carrier Dome opened in 1980. Gampel opened in 1990. Of course, the two schools don’t really compete now that they aren’t in the Big East. Syracuse moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. UConn was left behind in the American Athletic Conference, effectively out of the big-time picture in college athletics and falling further behind with developments like this.
According to The Associated Press, “the stadium would be built on private property near the main campus and is envisioned as part of a complex with a 250-room hotel, 160 apartments and 150,000 feet of retail space. The school owns the Carrier Dome but would be a tenant of the proposed new stadium, which would be built with a combination of private and taxpayer dollars, the letter says.”
The AP story added, “It is not clear what would happen to the Carrier Dome if the new stadium is built.”
