Well, Husky Nation, how would you feel about Jim Calhoun coaching basketball at Boston College?
Here’s the story that just moved on ESPN.com.
Just my opinion, but I think you can forget about this story as soon as you read it.
Notice the story makes no mention whether or not Boston College is interested in Calhoun, who retired from UConn in 2012 with health problems and before the Huskies served their one-season ban from postseason play.
Judge the merits of the story yourself, but Dom Amore of The Hartford Courant, who is in Buffalo with the Huskies, just tweeted: “just spoke to Jim Calhun about BC job: “I have not talked to any other school and I don’t plan to talk to any other school.” #UConnmen”
And Gavin Keefe of The New London Day tweeted: “Calhoun: “I’m not trying to get back into basketball. I’m not seeking a job.” #UConn”
The problem here is that some reporters hear what they want to hear – and follow-up questions would simply ruin the actual story.
There was a day when Jim Calhoun wanted nothing more than to coach at Boston College. I think those days are behind him. Right now, Calhoun might be feeling better and, thanks to Larry Brown and what happened at SMU this season, he might be wondering to himself if he could still handle the rigors of being a head coach.
Calhoun had harsh words for BC when the Eagles left the Big East for the ACC. He ended the long series between the schools. That “cold war” has eased a bit, but there are administrators still at BC who probably don’t care much for Calhoun – and certainly wouldn’t hire him.
Boston College should be putting together the most enticing financial package possible for Harvard coach Tommy Amaker. But even if the Eagles do that, it might not be enough to grab Amaker away from his present job. Former Pitt and UCLA coach Ben Howland has been mentioned as a strong candidate as well.
