According to reports out of Boston, University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Shakim Phillips is looking into the possibility of transferring back to Boston College for his final season of eligibility and apparently has ended his stay at UConn.
Phillips, UConn’s third leading receiver in 2013 with 28 catches for 406 yards, began his career at Boston College and appeared in four games for the Eagles in 2010. After transferring to UConn and sitting out the 2011 season, he played for the Huskies in 2012 and 2013.
SB Nation’s Boston College site, BC Interruption, filed this story Tuesday night, after Adam Kurkjian of the Boston Herald tweeted that Phillips was on the Boston College campus.
A spokesman for UConn athletics said Wednesday morning the school had no comment on the reports.
Phillips did not play in UConn’s spring game on April 12. UConn said he was injured. Transferring back to an original school would be an unusual decision. If Phillips has enough credits to graduate from UConn this spring, it could be possible from him to transfer as a graduate student without sitting out another season.
UConn’s spring prospectus listed Phillips as one of seven offensive starters returning for the Huskies, including wide receivers Geremy Davis and Deshon Foxx. Wide receiver is the deepest position on the roster with Kamal Abrams, Dhameer Bradley, John Green, and Brian Lemelle bringing the total of returning lettermen to six – without Phillips.
Noel Thomas and Thomas Lucas also had impressive springs at wide receiver.
Phillips started 11 games at UConn. Eight of those came last season when he also missed four games because of injury. Against Maryland on Sept. 14, 2013, Phillips had career highs in receptions (10), yards (178), longest reception (75) and longest kickoff return (39).
Since Phillips transferred to UConn Steve Addazio has replaced Frank Spaziani as BC coach. This was UConn’s first spring under new coach Bob Diaco, hired in December to replace Paul Pasqualoni, who was dismissed after an 0-4 start in 2013.
Phillips, originally from Paterson, N.J., caught 60 passes for 805 yards and 4 touchdowns at UConn.
