Rip Hamiton would have stayed at UConn if . . .

Just ran across this article from Syracuse.com. UConn basketball fans should check it out.

Former UConn star Richard Hamilton, who helped the Huskies to their first national championship in 1999, was in Syracuse this week to participate in the Sportscaster U program at the school. During the session, Hamilton said he would have stayed in school, rather than leaving early for the NBA, if college athletes were allowed pay under NCAA rules.

“For me it was about timing but also financial situation,” Hamilton is quoted as saying. “It was a chance to take care of the people that took care of you your entire life.”

It’s certainly not news that Hamilton – or many other players – have left to take care of their families and friends. But his comments are interesting in light of all the recent controversy over college athletes being paid, forming unions, and the various lawsuits being brought against the NCAA – especially the current Ed O’Bannon trial.

Not sure I’ve heard Rip say these things in this context.

Hamilton and other former players discussed stipends and the struggles that many athletes go through while NCAA schools make huge profits off their performances.
