According to several published reports, former UConn forward DeAndre Daniels may be playing in Europe next season, despite the fact that the Toronto Raptors used the 37th pick overall to select Daniels in the NBA Draft last month.
The Toronto Sun was first to report the speculation about Daniels’ future. “Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri has indicated Daniels will be stashed in Europe for a year to get some much-needed playing time,” wrote Ryan Wolstat of the Sun.
It appears Raptors management desires a more experienced cast to surround star player Kyle Lowry. Just last week Lowry agreed to a four-year, $48 million contrat. In addition, DeMar DeRozan is receiving $9.5 million a season for at least the next two years.
The story provides a detailed look at Toronto’s salary cap situation, including the impact of a buyout owed Marcus Camby and a $4.58-million trade exception from the Rudy Gay trade.
The Raptors would retain the rights to Daniels. Here’s an interesting story on that trend.
