College of Charleston fires men’s basketball coach

When UConn plays College of Charleston on Nov. 20 in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Doug Wojcik will not be the head coach of the Cougars.

Wojcik was fired by College of Charleston President Glenn McConnell Tuesday, just hours after the bracket for the 2014 Puerto Rico Tip-Off was released. UConn and Charleston will play Nov. 20 (12:30 p.m., ESPNU).

The decision Tuesday came after of month-long investigation by the school after players, assistant coaches and athletic department staffers alleged that Wojcik had verbally abused them. McConnell issued a statement that the dismissal was immediate and for cause.

“I am writing today to let you know I have made the decision to terminate head men’s basketball coach Doug Wojcik’s employment at the College of Charleston for just cause, pursuant to the terms of his contract, effective immediately,” McConnell said his letter to the “campus community.”

“I greatly appreciate your patience and understanding while the college works to find the best path forward for the men’s basketball program. Effective immediately, athletic director Joe Hull is responsible for the men’s basketball program.”

The school reportedly is trying to avoid paying the $1.2 million still owed Wojcik for the final three seasons of his five-year contract, by firing him with cause.

The investigation resulted in a 50-page report that contained summaries of interviews with Wojcik, Hull and 25 others. Wojcik reportedly said he was shocked by the allegations.
