Kansas men to play 10 teams from 2014 NCAA tourney

The Big 12 announced its men’s basketball conference schedule Thursday, allowing Kansas to release its complete 2014-15 schedule. Included among the opponents are 13 who advance to the 2014 postseason (10 NCAA, three NIT). Five of those advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 or farther in 2014.

Here is a breakdown, courtesy of KU media relations.

— The 10 NCAA participants on the KU schedule for 2014-15 include Big 12 foes Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas. Kansas’ non-conference opponents which went to the NCAA Tournament are Florida and Kentucky and, potentially, Tennessee and Michigan State. Kentucky and Florida each advanced to the 2014 Final Four, while Michigan State went to the Elite Eight and Iowa State and Tennessee the Sweet 16. Big 12 member West Virginia participated in the 2014 NIT as did KU non-conference opponents Georgetown and Utah. Tennessee and Michigan State are potential opponents in the 2014 Orlando Classic, Nov. 27-30.

–This will mark the fourth-straight year of Big 12 round-robin competition to determine one true champion in men’s basketball. KU went 16-2 in winning the title in 2012, tied Kansas State going 14-4 in 2013 and won it outright going 14-4 in 2014. The Jayhawks have won 10-straight Big 12 regular-season titles.–For the ninth-straight year, and the 15th time since the inception of the Big 12, KU will be featured on ESPN’s Big Monday four times: Jan. 19 vs. Oklahoma, Feb. 2 vs. Iowa State, Feb. 16 at West Virginia and Feb. 23 at Kansas State. Kansas is 52-17 all-time on Big Monday (29-1 at home, 23-16 on the road), including 33-9 under head coach Bill Self.–KU will make multiple regular-season appearances on CBS for the 14th-straight year hosting UNLV on Jan. 4 and Texas on Jan. 24. Under Self, the Jayhawks have appeared on CBS 53 times, amassing a 39-14 record (11-2 home, 9-5 away, 19-7 neutral).–For the fourth-consecutive, year the Jayhawks will play as part of the Champions Classic when they go up against Kentucky in Indianapolis on Nov. 18. The last time KU and Kentucky met was in the 2012 NCAA title game in New Orleans. Michigan State will play Duke in the other Champions Classic contest.

–In May 2013, the Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences announced an annual men’s basketball challenge that began during the 2013-14 season. KU and Florida will meet for the second time in the challenge with this season’s contest in Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 5.

–Kansas is the only school in the Big 12 to have a winning series record against every conference team in men’s basketball.

–Kansas is first in the conference in wins with a 245-49 record in Big 12 regular-season games. Texas is next at 194-102. Including the Big 12 tournament, Kansas is tops at 281-58.

–Big 12 basketball has been ranked among the top five conferences in final RPI (post-NCAA Championship) for seven-straight seasons and 12 of the last 13 years (since 2002). In 2013-14 the Big 12 was No. 1 in overall RPI.

Season ticket sales for KU’s 18 home games, the 17 in Allen Fieldhouse and the Dec. 13 game against Utah in the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., are now on sale. To order tickets fans must be active members of the Williams Education Fund, which can be done by making a minimum gift pledge of $100.
