UConn’s Davis gets his chance with NY Giants

Despite the fact many prognosticators said he wouldn’t be selected in the NFL Draft, UConn wide receiver Geremy Davis was taken by the New York Giants Saturday. Davis was selected with the 10th pick of the sixth round, pick No. 186 overall.

Davis joins cornerback Byron Jones, giving UConn two players taken in the 2015 NFL Draft. Jones was selected in the first round Thursday night, taken by the Dallas Cowboys with the No. 27 overall. Jones became just the second UConn player ever taken in the first round.

The two UConn players now become part of the Giants-Cowboys rivalry in the NFC East. Davis was home in Georgia watching the draft with family and friends when his name was announced Saturday afternoon.

In addition, UConn defensive lineman D.J. McBryde signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Davis ended his career as the most prolific receiver in UConn’s FBS era and among the top-six in program history in receptions and receiving yards. He caught a pass in every game he played, finishing his career with a reception in 36-straight contests dating back to 2011.

Davis did see his production go down last season, a year that saw the Huskies make the transition from coach Paul Pasqualoni to Bob Diaco. He began the season with a target as UConn’s most dangerous offensive weapon. For whatever reason, whether it was excellent coverage or the inability of UConn’s quarterbacks to get the ball to Davis, he wasn’t involved in the offense much early in the season.

Scouts criticized Davis for not having enough speed. But Davis does run good routes and is outstanding at jumping or coming back to catch balls that are not thrown precisely. Davis is an athletic specimen (6-2, 216) with a strong upper body. There has been talk that Davis could gain weight in the NFL and possibly play tight end.
