FoxSports.com college basketball power rankings – Dec. 11

Quite a bit of movement this week in my college basketball power rankings, posted today on FoxSports.com. Arizona is the new No. 1, followed by Syracuse, Ohio State, Louisville and Michigan State in the top five. Michigan State, No. 1 last week, dropped four spots after that home loss to North Carolina. The Tar Heels are back in our top 25  at No. 18.

Our biggest movers this week are Villanova, up six spots to No. 9, and Kansas, which dropped from No. 5 to No. 24. The Jayhawks, who started four freshmen Tuesday night in a loss to Florida, have been playing sloppy basketball since their tripped to the Bahamas on Thanksgiving weekend. Bill Self’s team lacks leadership and toughness right now. Kansas has too much talent to keep playing this way but the Jayhawks aren’t good enough to win while turning the ball over 24 times and that’s what they did against Florida.

And to “scootmandu,” who asked if I really wrote, “The Badgers don’t function well on offense” – yes, yes I did. How did I choose that “absurd summation?”  Well, in Division I, Wisconsin ranks 183rd in points per game (73.2), 235th in assists per game (12.1) and 152nd in field goal percentage (.453). The Badgers are 11-0 and are finding ways to win, primarily through outstanding defense and 39.2 percent shooting from three-point range.
