Will the O’Bannon trial alter college athletics forever?

A very interesting period in the history of the NCAA begins on Monday. Nothing is happening on the court. This action will take place in a court of law.

Ed O’Bannon v. the NCAA begins Monday. If you haven’t heard much about the case, you likely will – and soon.

To get you up to date, here is what has happened recently.

O’Bannon, the lead plaintiff, issued this statement Saturday:

“What began five years ago as a complaint over the use of my own likeness, finally reaches its apex on Monday when our case brings the NCAA and its practices into a judicial forum. As I’ve stated from the very beginning, it is time to right a wrong. I look forward to making our case in court, a case on behalf of both current and former student-athletes who have been exploited and unfairly constrained within a free market society. Players need a voice and we are here to finally give them their rightful voice as an integral part of a multi-billion dollar industry. Now is the time for change.”

Jon Solomon of CBSSports.com put together this timeline, which goes back to the start in 2009.

And this isn’t the only legal challenge facing the NCAA.

Change is coming and it is long overdue. If you enjoy college sports, this is definitely worth following.
