UConn, Georgetown to renew basketball rivalry

Good news today for fans of the old Big East basketball conference.

UConn and Georgetown have announced the renewal of their rivalry in a home-and-home series the next two seasons. Georgetown is scheduled to come to Connecticut on Jan. 23, 2016, with the Huskies visiting the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., to play the Hoyas on Jan. 21, 2017.

The rivalry dates back to 1958 – long before the formation of the Big East in 1979 – and includes 64 games. Georgetown currently holds a 35-29 advantage. In Big East play, Georgetown won 32 of 58 games but when Jim Calhoun took over the Huskies program the series became one of the most heated in Big East history. The two programs actually share the record for most Big East Conference tournament championships with seven each.

Of course, the conference rivalry ended with the split of the Big East. The Hoyas now play in the reorganized Big East. UConn is in the American Athletic Conference.

Georgetown won the last game played between the two teams, a 79-78 double overtime thriller at Gampel Pavilion on Feb. 27, 2013. UConn lost its last two games against the Hoyas, but the teams split their last four contests. UConn’s last win against Georgetown was a 79-62 decision on March 9, 2011, during the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, on the Huskies’ way to the Big East Tournament title and their third NCAA National Championship.
